It was less than a decade ago that I was a newly graduated student with dreams of travelling overseas and becoming a world famous and globally revered international business man. Obviously, I was a naive student who was basing his expectations more on the movie 'Wall Street" than on any actual knowledge I had of the actual craft of international business.
I imagined my life an an international business man would be spent waiting on Limo Services as opposed to visa services.
Although it was just over five small years ago, in hindsight, it seems like an absolute lifetime ago and I have been on more international bound flight than I ever thought possible. This article is a lot less about the business struggles of a young man and more about the travelling tips that I have to give those like myself who wanted to conquer the world.
In all reality, i do wish that I would have stumbled upon an article all those years ago while studying in college. Perhaps some tips from a travel veteran would have helped me gain insight on how to avoid the trials and tribulations of international business. There is a good chance that I might not have heeded the advice, but it certainly would at least helped me know what to expect.
So check this out, we have plenty of advice for you if you are planning to board the next flight into the abyss, because when it comes to international business travel for beginners, you need to be preparatory about everything.
In the next few weeks we will give advice on everything from the Airport Limo to the hotels you should use.
After having been a passenger on late night flight to Vietnam, Taiwan, and Japan, I certainly have my fair share of insight when it comes to travelling for the purpose of business endeavors.
1.) You should never make the faulty assumption that a business Visa will be waiting for you upon arrival. It might very well be true that some companies wait until you arrive to finish all of your paper work, but when it comes to work permits and business visas, you could end up on the wrong end of a trap. In addition, if you end up having to do the work yourself, your paperwork will be thousands of miles away. Make sure to steer clear of any legal work issues by spending the extra money and time to make sure all of your paper work is in order before you leave.
2.) Make sure that you make plenty of phone calls and do a solid amount of research on the business you would like to work for. Truth be told, having a professional sounding receptionist or a business savvy offer letter means very little. This absolutely does not mean that you should be afraid to take a little bit of a gamble, gamble big, win big, but truth be told, you should always know what kind of risks you are taking before hand so you can figure out if the gamble is even worth it.
3.) You should never go in with the expectations that a c heck will be waiting for you once you arrive. Other countries have different tax codes and pay roll systems. Often times, the work vises can take quite a bit to arrive, so it would be very wise of you to always bankroll your wallet with a few months worth of salary so that you never end up in a very sticky situation.
